My PhD research…

Thesis title: Determination of the convective heat transfer coefficients from the surfaces of buildings within urban street canyons.

A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
Mr James Oliver Smith.
University of Bath, March 2010.

The aim of my research was to develop a better understanding of the rates of convective heat transfer occurring from the external surfaces of buildings in urban environments.  Significant development of the naphthalene sublimation technique was undertaken which permitted a range of new correlations to be developed with respect to wind speed, wind direction and street canyon geometry.  This work was undertaken in the Building Research Establishment (BRE) wind tunnel in Watford, UK.

The thesis was submitted to the University of Bath in late 2009 and my viva examination took place on the 5th March 2010. I’m very pleased to say that I passed with only a few minor corrections!
